Ovaprim Injection with Domperidone for Spawning Aid in Broodstock Finfish

Overview

Domperidone is included in Ovaprim, a medicinal injection solution combined with a salmon gonadotropin releasing hormone analog. This combination is used exclusively as a spawning aid in broodstock finfish to stimulate ovulation and spermiation. It is not approved for use in fish intended for human or animal consumption and is legally marketed only as an indexed product for minor species.

What is it used for?

Ovaprim Injection is indicated solely for use as a spawning aid in sexually mature finfish broodstock. It supports the reproductive process by stimulating ovulation and spermiation during or near the natural spawning season in these fish.

Active ingredients

Domperidone

How it works

Ovaprim contains a salmon gonadotropin releasing hormone analog (sGnRHa) that triggers the release of stored gonadotropins from the fish's pituitary gland. Domperidone, a dopamine inhibitor, removes inhibitory effects on gonadotropin release. Together, these actions promote final maturation and spawning by influencing reproductive hormone levels.

Dosage and administration

General Dose

The recommended dose is 0.5 ml per kilogram of fish body weight. This may vary depending on species, physiological state, environment, and water temperature.

Administration

  • Inject intraperitoneally (into the abdominal cavity) or intramuscularly (in the muscle near the dorsal fin).
  • Use sterile syringes with Luer Lock tips or permanently attached needles for accurate dosing.
  • For small fish, tuberculin syringes and needle guards may help minimize trauma.

Timing and Dosing Schedule

  • Usually, a single dose suffices if fish are within or near their natural spawning season.
  • Some species may require a split dose: a loading dose of 10% followed by the remaining 90% at least 6 hours later.
  • In warm water species, ovulation might occur as quickly as 4 hours after treatment.

Handling

If needed, sedate the fish before injection and handle with care to avoid injury or stress. Post-injection, return fish carefully to clean, aerated water.

Contraindications

Use is contraindicated in fish intended for human or animal consumption and in any off-label manner not consistent with the label.
