Colace for occasional constipation relief

Overview

Colace is an oral stool softener used to relieve occasional constipation. It helps to ease bowel movements by softening the stool, making it easier to pass and reducing straining.

What is it used for?

Colace is intended to relieve occasional constipation in adults and children aged 2 years and older. It generally produces a bowel movement within 12 to 72 hours after use.

Active ingredients

Docusate sodium 100 mg

How it works

Docusate sodium, the active ingredient in Colace, works by increasing the amount of water the stool absorbs in the gut. This softens the stool, which helps to produce a more comfortable and regular bowel movement.

Dosage and administration

Adults and children 12 years and older

Take 1 to 3 capsules daily either as a single dose or divided doses.

Children 2 to under 12 years

Take 1 capsule daily.

Children under 2 years

Use only as directed by a doctor.

Doses should be taken by mouth only. Do not use with mineral oil unless directed by a healthcare professional.

Contraindications

Do not use if you are currently taking mineral oil unless instructed by a doctor.

Warnings and precautions

  • Do not use if currently taking mineral oil unless a doctor advises otherwise.
  • Stop use and consult a doctor if you experience rectal bleeding, fail to have a bowel movement after use, or if you need to use a stool softener for more than one week.
  • Seek medical advice before use if you have stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, or notice a sudden change in bowel habits lasting over two weeks.

Side effects

The label does not list specific side effects; however, patients should report any unusual symptoms or persistent digestive discomfort to their healthcare provider.

Drug interactions

Colace should not be used concurrently with mineral oil unless under medical supervision, as it may increase mineral oil absorption and cause side effects.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Ask a healthcare professional before use if pregnant or breastfeeding.

Overdose information

In case of overdose, seek immediate medical attention or contact a Poison Control Center right away.

Storage

Store at 25°C (77°F), with allowed temperature excursions between 15°C and 30°C (59°F to 86°F). Keep the container tightly closed and out of reach of children.
