Clotrimazole USP 1%
How it works
Clotrimazole works by stopping the growth of fungi that cause vaginal yeast infections, thereby eliminating the infection and reducing associated itching and irritation.
Dosage and administration
Adults and children 12 years and older:
- Vaginal cream: Insert one applicatorful of cream into the vagina at bedtime for 7 consecutive days. Wash applicator after each use.
- External cream: Apply a small amount of cream to the itching or irritated skin outside the vagina using your fingertip. Use twice daily for up to 7 days as needed.
Children under 12 years: Consult a doctor before use.
Contraindications
- Do not use if you have never had a vaginal yeast infection diagnosed by a healthcare provider.
Warnings and precautions
- For vaginal use only.
- Do not use if this is your first vaginal yeast infection unless diagnosed by a doctor.
- Avoid use if you experience lower abdominal, back, or shoulder pain, fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, or foul-smelling vaginal discharge, as these may signal a more serious condition.
- If you have frequent yeast infections (e.g., once a month or three times in six months), consult a doctor—possible underlying causes include pregnancy, diabetes, or immune system problems.
- Avoid using tampons, douches, spermicides, or other vaginal products during treatment; condoms and diaphragms may be damaged, reducing protection against pregnancy and STDs.
- Do not have vaginal intercourse during treatment.
- Mild increases in vaginal burning, itching, or irritation may occur.
- If symptoms do not improve within 3 days, worsen, or last more than 7 days, stop use and ask a doctor.
- Stop use and seek medical advice if you develop rash, hives, abdominal pain, fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, or foul-smelling vaginal discharge.
- If pregnant or breastfeeding, consult a healthcare professional before use.
- Keep out of reach of children. If swallowed, seek medical help immediately or contact a Poison Control Center.
Side effects
- Mild vaginal burning, itching, or irritation may occur.
Drug interactions
Do not use tampons, douches, spermicides, or other vaginal products during treatment as they may reduce effectiveness or cause failure of protective devices like condoms and diaphragms.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
- If pregnant or breastfeeding, ask a health professional before using clotrimazole.
