Overview
Cefdinir oral suspension is a semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections. It is formulated as a strawberry and fresh cream flavored oral liquid intended primarily for pediatric use. Cefdinir works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis and is effective against various susceptible bacteria, including some strains resistant to penicillins.
What is it used for?
Cefdinir suspension is indicated for the treatment of infections confirmed or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria. It is commonly used in children aged 6 months to 12 years for bacterial respiratory tract infections such as acute bacterial otitis media. It should be reserved for bacterial infections to reduce the development of resistance.

Cefdinir USP
How it works
Cefdinir is a bactericidal cephalosporin that inhibits the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall, leading to bacterial death. It is stable against some beta-lactamase enzymes, which allows it to be effective against certain bacteria resistant to other beta-lactam antibiotics. Resistance can occur due to beta-lactamase hydrolysis, altered penicillin-binding proteins, or decreased bacterial permeability.
Dosage and administration
General Dosing
- Dosing for children (6 months to 12 years) is based on weight, typically 7 mg/kg to 14 mg/kg orally once or twice daily.
- The suspension strengths include 125 mg/5 mL and 250 mg/5 mL after reconstitution.
- Cefdinir may be taken with or without food, as food intake does not significantly affect pediatric efficacy.
Special Populations
- In patients with markedly compromised renal function (creatinine clearance
- Elderly patients do not require dose adjustments unless they have significant renal impairment.
Warnings and precautions
- Use cefdinir only to treat infections clearly caused or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria to avoid promoting antibiotic resistance.
- Patients with severe renal impairment require dosage adjustment and careful monitoring.
