It is intended for intramuscular use only and has established efficacy in adult patients for rapid control of agitation symptoms.

What is it used for?

Abilify Injection is indicated for the acute treatment of agitation associated with schizophrenia or bipolar I disorder, manic or mixed episodes in adults. It is used to manage psychomotor agitation that interferes with diagnosis and care.

Active ingredients

aripiprazole

Dosage and administration

Adults: The recommended dose for agitation is 9.75 mg (1.3 mL) intramuscularly. The effective dose range demonstrated is 5.25 mg to 15 mg; 15 mg has not shown additional benefit over 9.75 mg. A lower dose of 5.25 mg may be used based on clinical factors. If agitation persists, additional doses may be given with a maximum cumulative dose of 30 mg per day. Repeat injections should be spaced at least 2 hours apart. Oral aripiprazole (10 to 30 mg/day) should replace the injection as soon as clinically appropriate. Do not administer intravenously or subcutaneously. Inject slowly deep into muscle.

Warnings and precautions

Elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis treated with antipsychotics have increased mortality risk and Abilify is not approved for this population. Children, adolescents, and young adults treated with antidepressants (including adjunctive use of Abilify) have increased risk of suicidal thinking and behavior. Patients should be monitored closely for clinical worsening, suicidality, or unusual behavioral changes. Families and caregivers should be advised about close observation.

Drug interactions

Abilify dose should be adjusted when coadministered with strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (dose reduced by half) or CYP2D6 inhibitors (dose reduced by at least half); doses should be adjusted upward after withdrawal of inhibitors. When coadministered with CYP3A4 inducers such as carbamazepine, Abilify dose should be doubled, with dose reduction after inducer withdrawal.
